Director-General Pascal Lamy, in his address to the High-Level Conference on World Food Security on 3 June 2008 in Rome, said that "through greater and fairer competition, international trade can help lower prices". He added that the Doha Round would reduce trade-distorting subsidies and tariffs, and could strengthen WTO rules on export restrictions.
